The Certificate in Orthopedic Manual Therapy (COMT) provides clinicians with intensive tuition in an integrated and thoroughly modern, evidence-based approach to orthopedic manual therapy of the spine, pelvis, as well as upper and lower limbs.

The primary aim of this intensive, evidence-based program is to develop broad state-of-the-art knowledge and skills in the examination and management of disorders affecting the joint, muscle, and neural systems. The emphasis is on understanding when and where to use physical treatments, including a range of manual therapy concepts and exercises, to provide a more functional and comprehensive approach to managing various neuro-musculoskeletal conditions.

Course objectives:

At the completion of the program, the participants will:

• Be conversant in the most recent developments in anatomy, pathoanatomy, and age-related changes of the spinal column.
• Be aware of the evidence base for manual therapy and the disorders suitable for this approach.
• Have an understanding of pain mechanisms, their clinical relevance, and appropriate measures to address complex chronic pain disorders and the neurophysiological basis for pain relief by manual therapy.
• Be proficient in applying spinal, shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle, and lower limb articular, neural, and motor control examination procedures.
• Be proficient in determining a differential diagnosis based on an integrated, clinical reasoning-informed examination of the articular, neural, and motor control examination systems.
• Be able to formulate the most appropriate and effective manual therapy management program suitable for the assessed condition.
• Be proficient in applying an appropriate manual therapy treatment strategy incorporating manual treatment techniques and specific exercises.
• Be able to integrate clinical and theoretical constructs to achieve and reflect on clinical outcomes.

Course topics:

• Assessment of articular dysfunction incorporates the combined Movement approach, as well as segmental manual diagnosis. 
• Evaluation and management of lumbopelvic motor control impairment. 
• Evaluation and management of motor control impairment for the cervical spine is likewise based on current evidence-based criteria.
• Management based on identification of specific sub-groups amenable to manual therapy, including: Movement impairment (articular dysfunction), Neural tissue pain disorders, and Motor control impairment.
• Treatment for the movement impairment articular dysfunction sub-group includes a range of mobilization, manipulation (high velocity thrust), and mobilization with movement techniques.
• Subclassification of neural pain disorders into compressive neuropathy, sensory hypersensitivity, and peripheral nerve sensitization based on results of clinical examinations. 
• This sub-classification system is management-driven and is backed up by supporting evidence for its validity and efficacy in management.

Module 1: Spinal manual therapy (7 days)

Module 2: Peripheral manual therapy (6 days)

COMT: Attend both Spinal and Peripheral Manual Therapy Modules (Certified Orthopedic Manual Therapist) (13 days)

The Certified Manual Therapy Practitioner (CMTP) Exam:

Exam retakes: Not required. 

Certificate renewal/reaccreditation is not needed.
