Advanced Myofascial Release Techniques

Program description:

This two course covers the basic skills necessary and to safely begin Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) and cupping techniques. Participants will receive hands-on instruction in the proper use of IASTM and cupping techniques through a lab-focused teaching format. The course will address proper instrument selection to address body contours and reach target tissues.

Course objectives:

At the completion of this program the participant will be able to:

● List the precautions and contraindications for IASTM and dry cupping

● Understand, identify, and apply the appropriate IASTM treatment edge: concave, convex, broad vs. small contact, single bevel, or double bevel, based on the target tissue and desired treatment effect

● Differentiate between normal and abnormal soft tissue of the extremities and trunk using IASTM tools with motion based on patient response, tissue feel, and resonance of the IASTM tool through assessment scanning strokes based on 3 models

● Choose appropriate basic treatment IASTM strokes (i.e. sweeping, fanning, brushing, strumming, and framing) and dry cupping based on the body region contours, nature of the soft tissue restriction, and desired treatment outcome

● Integrate IASTM intervention and dry cupping into the overall treatment program including: warm up, IASTM intervention based on the objectives outlined above, tissue elongation/stretching, appropriate ROM and/or strengthening exercises, cool down, and home exercise to produce carry-over of the treatment effect and enhance treatment outcomes

● Given the specific case studies presented in class, choose appropriate IASTM and dry cupping treatments for movement dysfunctions resulting from but not limited to hyper or hypo-facilitated muscle tissue, fascia restrictions, joint stiffness, scar adhesions, and pain limited movement loss

● Understand the types of cuppings, contraindications and indication of cupping treatment.

● Apply different cupping treatment in different part of the body to manage lymphatic dysfunction.
